~Saint Pelagia~

Dear editor,

I am writing to nominate Saint Pelagia for the best place for a  day out near Heraklion of Crete.

Saint Pelagia is a beautiful place to spend a day out or the summer holidays. It has got awesome beaches where a lot of activities can be done such as swimming or windsurfing if there is wind. The sea's water has a magical colour-a mix between light blue and green! It's wonderful. In Saint Pelagia, there are also a lot of restaurants which are always open to welcome customers who want to taste the delicious, traditional or not, dishes of Saint Pelagia. There are also a lot of cafeterias which are open for all the duration of day. Moreover, there are some night clubs, which are open at night and where the adolescents have fun.In Saint Pelagia, some shops can be found where  you can buy whatever you want. There are also some souvenir shops and a supermarket which is open all day. There are a lot of hotels and appartments, too! Finally,in Saint Pelagia there is a small cloister which is really a beauty spot!Nearby Saint Pelagia, there are some historical attractions, too.

When I first visited Saint Pelagia,I got amazed thanks to its natural beauty!I did a lot of things there:I swam into the splendid beaches,I tasted traditional dishes especially seafood,I played rackets in the sand and I visited the cloister, which was really amazing. In my opinion,it was a lovely experience and since then each year, especially in the summer,I visit Saint Pelagia.

All things considered,it's an extraordinary place for a day out and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

Yours faithfully,

Androulaki Sofia

~The superhero quiz~

Hello again dear readers,
I'll talk you about superheroes again. Not exactly, but I'll tell you an amazing site, where you can make a test and see who superhehro you are! When I saw it I was very surprised! You should make this test! It has a lot of fun! So here is the site: The Superhero Quiz. You ca just click the word and you'll be here.

The results of my test were: I am the "Green Lantern". I don't know this superhero but it's a chance to meet him!

~Superhero Database: Superheroes, Villains, Teams and Superpowers~

Hello dear readers,
Yesterday, I visited and English website about superheroes called "Superhero Database", and I would like to inform you about this fascinating website and show you some things I found there.

In this site, you can find an enormous list of superheroes or find some information about your favourite superhero just by putting his name into a gap. For example, my favourite superheroes are"Batman", "Superman"and "Spiderman".

In Batman's section I found his Powerstats, his Biography, his Appearance, his Work, and his Relations. This really helped me to understand better who "Batman" is and understand better his stories too.
In this site, you can also compare three heroes. For example I compared Batman, Superman and Spiderman. The results were clear. The winner was Superman, with a big power difference. So, congratulations to Superman. You ca go and compare every hero you want!
An other thing you can find in this website, is all the superheroes' teams! Is it amazing, isn't it? I found so many popular and unpopoular superheroes' teams. For example: "Legion of Super-Heroes", "X-men" e.t.c
Something that amazed me a lot yesterday was the list of all the superpowers! This list has all the superpowers in an alphabetical order and it explains you what's the meaning of the superpower you chose. I chose "flight" and that's what I was informed:Flight is an extremely common power used for transporation, allowing he user to lift off the ground and fly throygh the air. Like many common superpowers, flight was first popularized by Superman.
If you look down the meaning, you will se a list of all the superheroes who can fly.

This site has also a forum, where you can make a topic and discuss about your favourite superhero, or some questions you might have.

Finally, in the site, there's a huge galleru where you can see superhero images.

Bullying to teachers!

                                                Stop bullying!

Bullying is an inhumane act that is in common everywhere. These days, bullying has got many forms, but I would like to focus on the not enough commonly reported fact that teachers are bullied.

To begin with, teachers may be the victims of bullying when the students cause sadness and distress to them. This is why their behaviour is disruptive in which students seize power in class.

We must say...
In addition to that, teachers are bullied by students due to the bullying that students cause to their teachers about the passing to exams. Sometimes, students destroy teacher's property as well as verbal abuse. Furthermore, students publish web postings in which anyone can say anything whether is true or not. And last but not least, teachers are also victims of bullying by other teachers.

On balance, many teachers are victims of bullying by students or other teachers. So, me must protest about their bad working conditions. And we mustn't serve as an example for the people who are bullies and we must avoid and face up to the bullying in all forms of it, by all means.

DOGGIES AND STORIES

        WHY NOT TALK ABOUT PETS?

Numerous experiments, which  have been conducted by scientists and researchers, have shown that it is impossible for a human being not to have a friend. Friends are always honest and turn to each other at the happiest, or grumpiest moments. But there is an other kind of friend that is more loyal and four-legged! So, we are going to talk about pets!

The most popular ones are actually dogs. They have been given the nickname "man's best friend", because they are always loyal to their owners and never disobedient (or maybe yes, at the first stage of adoption). Apart from companionship, dogs are being used as hunters, guards  etc. That's because of their ability to smell, see and  hear better than us.In other words, because they have more "developed" senses, as mammals.

Here are some stories:

Friends for ever!
Although I really don't want to become tiring and although I am bursting into tears at the moment, I would really like to recite this amazing story only in a very few words. We have all heard about the touching story of Hachiko, a very affectionate Akita, which always hoped that its owner would appear at the train station, something that never happened. So, the very loyal dog sat at its usual  sit and waited non-stopping for its dead owner to come back as it commonly did. And we all know the dramatic end, though  Hachi became a great symbol in Japan.

Dogs in alert!
This scene happened a few weeks ago, here in Heraklion. An owner of two German Shepherd  dogs, who went on vocation, begged a neighbour to feed his huge and protective dogs. He agreed, but as he was afraid of them, he was putting their food from a passage. The first two days they were picking their food as planned, but the other days only one of them was coming. The worried neighbour called the owner, who immediately called the security system office to learn what was going on. Here's the thing: a thief had broken into his house and never left it, because the two dogs were "taking care" of him and were feeding themselves  by shifts.  So, the thief ready to be arrested, was safe and sound as well as the house.

From these examples, we can clearly see that dogs have emotions as humans and if that's not enough for you, I have a personal experience to share. One day, when I was extremely sad and crying, my dog came close to me and started barking in a depressing way something like crying but without tears! Nevertheless, what we all have to pay attention to is the fact that we have to treat them not with cruelty, but with love and affection, because they would never, ever leave as on the roads as we do!!!!

Thank you for reading,
Marina Konstantinou!

Everything 2000!!

Hello ladies and gentlemen!!!Recently,I visited an amazing site which talks about the millenium resource. This webpage includes useful information about big events which happened in 2000!Here are my favourite:

Fantasia 2000 Breaks IMAX Records
Disney sequel proves to be the most successful IMAX movie ever
Disney enters the 21st century and the new millennium making history. Fantasia 2000 has been playing in IMAX theaters for just a few months, and it is surpassing all IMAX box office records.

The millennial remake of Fantasia has raked in $27.4 million dollars and the show is playing at just 75 theaters worldwide (54 in the US), that's on par to bring in more money than any other IMAX movie ever. The movie is selling out theaters steadily since opening on New Year's Eve.
The success of Fantasia 2000 can be seen in different ways around the world. In Los Angeles, a temporary IMAX theater was built just for the movie and sold more than$1.4 million in advance tickets. In Spain, the movie set a national record for indoor theater events with more than 100,000 advance tickets sold. In Japan, the movie made $1.4 million in just 30 days and the movie was plying in just four theaters.

The money making is a bonus for Roy Disney who is seeing a lifelong dream realized with the opening of the movie. Disney has wanted to revive the 1940 Fantasia for years because it would be fulfilling his Uncle Walt Disney's dream for the movie. Walt Disney's original plan was to take out old segments and replace them with new ones as new ideas and technology developed. That plan didn't work out because the start of World War two increased the cost of making animated movies.

The remake finally began in 1991 when the original Fantasia was released to video and was an immediate success. That's when Roy Disney set the wheels in motion for a millennial remake. The rapid increase in the use of the computers in movie making also played a huge role.

Roy Disney used traditional music in the remake of Fantasia, with selections for Shostakovich, Respighi, Saint-Saens, Elgar and Astravinsky. Disney also brought in some contemporary elements such as using celebrities like Steve Martin, Bette Midler, and Penn and Teller to introduce segments. Disney says he wanted to use some Beatles recordings but wasn't sure how to make their music work in the movie so this time around he didn't use their music.
Disney hopes to one day use African and Asian music in Fantasia. Which begs the question, is there going to be more Fantasia remakes in the future?
"There's a lot of secret planning going on right now, " Roy Disney said "I would love to think that it's a legacy that really will live forever."
While we may have to wait for the next Fantasia for a while, there will be other IMAX movies to keep us occupied.
Fantasia 2000, is so successful it may change the future of IMAX movies. IMAX has signed deals with three studios-DreamWorks, 20th Century Fox and Sony Pictures-to feature animated characters in future films. Expect to see The Simpsons and Antz, in their first 3-D computer-generated animated movie, CybeWorld, set for release in October.

Millennium Dome Fails to Attract Big Crowds

Attendance for London’s Millennium centerpiece is below expectations

London's beleaguered Millennium Dome, supposedly the showpiece of Britain's 2000 celebrations, is failing to attract the hoped-for crowds, according to attendance figures just released.

The dome, a huge futuristic pavilion housing educational and cultural attractions, cost 758 million pounds (1.2 billion dollars/euros) to build.

It was hoped that 10 million excited tourists would click through its turnstiles this year, but it's got a long way to go according to new figures by the New Millennium Experience Company (NMEC) -- in charge of overseeing Britain's millennium event.

But from its opening at the start of the year up to April 16, 1,812,752 people had visited the attraction, the company said, adding however that it still hoped to achieve the 10-million figure needed to balance the budget.

The mammoth project, built in Greenwich, London, comprises 14 themed exhibition zones. Recently new management at the Dome, led by Pierre-Yves Gerbeau, a Disneyland Paris veteran, introduced longer opening hours in a bid to bring in more customers.

Former Dome boss Jennie Page was forced to resign following negative publicity surrounding the launch of the Dome on New Year's Eve and low visitor numbers during its first month of operation.

The Dome is being outshone by another new London tourist attraction, the "London Eye", a huge Ferris wheel on the side of the Thames river which takes you 135 meters (450 feet) into the air for panoramic views of the British capital.

A ride in one of the 32 air-conditioned capsules, whose stability are controlled by computer, gives a completely new perspective of London in a half-hour spin.

On a clear day you can see for 40 kilometers (25 miles) around the capital. The London Eye can carry 15,000 people a day, five million a year, as many as visit Paris' Eiffel Tower.

~Everything2000~

Hello dear readers,
Today I am going to inform you with some information about the new millennium, which I found at press here to visit the site. So let's star with the most interesting things I found in the site.

"Japanese Tourist Panicked After Y2K"

Odd but true story of Y2K fearing Japanese man showing up in Australian outback

Staff at a remote outback roadhouse in Western Australia have revealed how a Japanese tourist turned up
on their doorstep equipped with a flak jacket and gas mask, fearing the Y2K bug would trigger a nuclear explosion.
The terrified tourist had traveled to Australia, believing the world would be plunged into chaos as it entered the new millennium.
Customs officials have revealed how they stopped the man at immigration carrying a survival kit, a blowgun and a chemical warfare outfit.
And in the latest development in the incredible saga, outback residents tell how the man feared Armageddon had arrived, when a routine generator check on New Year's Eve caused a blackout.
Lisa Williams, who works at the Willare Bridge roadhouse 2334km north of Perth, said the man "freaked out" when the generators cut out at about 10pm on December 31, resulting in a four-minute power
blackout.
"He was running around going 'Y2K, Y2K', he was really panic-stricken," Ms Williams told the Australian Associated Press.
She said the man's English was poor and nobody was able to make him understand what was happening. It was not until roadhouse manager Graeme McNamara telephoned a Japanese interpreter in Broome, who then spoke to the terrified tourist that he calmed down.
He told them he believed the millennium bug would trigger a nuclear explosion and he planned to head for the outback because he thought it would be the safest place to be.
When he arrived in Australia, his flak jacket and the blowgun and darts, illegal in Australia, were confiscated by customs officials.
But the man was allowed to enter the country with the other items, which included an SAS basic remote survival book, a gas mask, dehydrated food, an army style water container, water purifying tablets and camping gear.
Roadhouse co-manager Sheree Marich said the man, dressed in army-style camouflage gear, had arrived at the roadhouse earlier that afternoon by taxi from Broome, a 165km trip for which he paid about $300.
The man left Australia, content that the world had not come to an end, after enjoying a restful holiday.

"2000 Years: The Millennium Concert"

Billy Joel profiting off New Year’s Eve concert with big double CD-disc

As a concertmaster, the more Billy Joel lets the music just happen, the better the show is. The piano man did just that during his New Year's Eve "Millennium Concert," which was recorded live for this two-disc, 25-song collection.  The CD is now out in stores.

At what was arguably the most important performance of Joel's career, he treated 20,000 Madison Square Garden fans (willing to brave the then-unknown Y2K terrors) to a rollicking, finely paced show that even included covers of Ludwig Van's Ninth Symphony; Op.125 Choral, the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman" and a boom chaga lagga-less version of Sly Stone's "Dance to the Music."

The atmosphere captured here is party festive and living room comfortable, as if Joel were having a few friends over to his house for beers, snacks and to hear a few songs he'd written.

Though fans will have all of these songs here on albums (some more than 20 years old), this is still an anthology worth having. Songs Joel wrote as a boy are given total justice here, and like fine wine are richer for the aging.

"Home Trends 2000"

High-tech and geared to work and play a look at the home of the 21st century
Imagine leaving work, getting in your car and starting dinner while driving home. That’s just one function of the home of the future. With a flick of a computer switch your home will respond to your needs.
The house may look the same on the outside, but inside homes in the new millennium will be much different than they are today. With the flick of switch, you can turn your windows from clear to opaque; making blinds and shades unnecessary. Your Thanksgiving turkey will be able to communicate with your oven, telling it how high to set the temperature and how long it needs to cook.
You can probably forget about having a robot do your vacuuming, at least in the short-term. But some are predicting that we will have devises that will stop the vacuum if the telephone rings. Other machines that will make our life easier may include: a washing machine that can read your clothes' cleaning instructions and select the appropriate water temperature, amount of soap and whether your cotton sweater should be line-dried or tossed in the dryer. A refrigerator that knows what you’re running low on and makes a digital grocery list-complete with the best prices available at area stores.

How about this little apron, it includes integrated power circuits and built-in microphone that allows for hands-free operation of kitchen appliances. It can be used to turn the temperature down on the stove, recall a recipe on the screen or tell your family lunch is ready.
Home layouts will change somewhat also. Kitchens and first floor family rooms will remain popular. Glamour baths will lose appeal and home offices will be a must for every family. Builder’s say we will begin to see wide-open rooms with moveable, nonload-bearing walls that divide living spaces based on changing needs. Retract all of the walls for a big party or erect them to create an intimate space for a candlelit dinner-for-two.

The biggest housing trend of the last 50 years - size - won't be as important in the next 50, predicts Gopal Ahluwalia, an economist with the Home Builders Association. The average size of a new house more than doubled in the last half-century, from 983 square feet in 1949 to more than 2,000 in 1999, according to the homebuilders.

Average size will stay about the same for the next 10 years, when it will start declining, says Ahluwalia. That's when 81 million baby boomers turn 65.

The aging population will also spur a trend toward "universal design" - adaptable living spaces for people with changing physical abilities. Look for kitchen counters that move up and down and a continued emphasis on first-floor master suites and laundry facilities.

The size will be used differently, however. "The conventional basic house" - the living room, dining room, kitchen and bedrooms - "will only be a small portion of the house," says one architect. An exercise room, a video room and an elaborate home office will eat up huge chunks of the 21st century house.

The residential office, too, will take on added importance as more people work from home. Gerald Celente, director of the Research Trends Institute and author of "Trends 2000," predicts that 50 percent of the American work force will work from home as soon as the nation is wired for high-speed Internet access.

Children, too, will be home more often as a large portion of their schooling will be done via computer. Homes will be equipped with 3-D virtual reality rooms where workers can talk with clients and students can communicate with teachers.

Report

To : Mr. Papadakis
From : Varverakis Marinos
Subject : Making the library more popular with teenagers

Introduction

I am writing with regard to my suggestion about how to make the library more popular with teenagers.

The library

To begin with, the library is located in a very convenient area in the centre for some teenagers because it is beside a school. The real problem is that the building is very old with old-fashioned decoration. So, it is very not very attractive for teenagers.

What teenagers would like

The entertainment for teenagers is the watching TV, playing computer games, reading magazines and of course they enjoy sitting and chatting in a modern place. Moreover, they like surfing the Internet, listening to music and watching films. On balance, teenagers do not really like studing and reading books so a library is not their favourite place.

Recommendations

First of all, I strongly support that the library will become a very attractive meeting place for local teenagers if some things were different. For instance, if we stocked more interesting books teenagers would like, more teenagers would visit the library. Furthermore, we should add some board games, such as chess or backgammon (which train your mind). Moreover, I suggest buying computers and iPads, which we can put in a special teenagers' room such as a cafe' where the decoration will be modern. We can also to install Wi-fi and e-books, like comics, magazines, adventure and fantasy books to make a gorgeous impression to teenagers. In addition to that, I suggest renting music CDs and DVDs or creating special rooms with projector where everyone can watch online films.

Story

                                     An arson
As soon as the phone rang, she knew something was wrong. After eight o'clock in the afternoon, Mary had her party. So, when the phone rang she started to feel very worried.
When she picked it up, she heard a girl's ear-splitting shout and suddenly she lost consciousness and she passed out. Then, she came round and she said "I must discover who called at all cost". The phone rang again and Mary picked it up quicly. A girl said "Help, a man has lit a fire". It was an arson! Mary reported this crime to the emergency services who took measures to avoid the damage.
Just then all of them went out or to a firefighter just in time and they followed the sirens of the fire truck. After that, she saw a man who threatened the policemen. He said he would throw the girl in the fire if they went near. Suddenly, a policeman told them "You must go". It is very dangerous here".
Eventually, they learned from the newspaper what had happened. The man was arrested. Moreover, the carbon dioxide from the burning wood made the girl pass out and get weaker but finally she was fine. However, the man stood trial for arson, blackmail, attempted homicide and the firefighters put out the fire.
